Before frowning the next time you hear that you need to
take a business trip, consider the vacation it can lead
you on. Business travel is more and more common as the
business world becomes truly global. You may find yourself
taking frequent business trips. For those of you that do,
you may find that you can benefit from these trips if your
company allows you to use the mileage and hotel points from
your business travel for personal travel. Each company has
different rules on this so you will want to make sure you
know your company's rules. Your trips to clients and to
meetings may lead to vacations to Europe, sunny islands
or your favorite vacation destination.
Most airlines offer frequent flyer rewards. You earn points
or miles based on the distance of your trip. You then
can use these miles towards upgrades or free airline
tickets. There are a number of airlines that have joined
with other airlines to allow you to use your miles or
points in all the participating airlines, not just the one
you flew on. This could be a fast and easy way to do some
free travel.
This is mainly possbile only for those people who can book
their own business travel. If you have internal travel
department you may not have options, but you can speak to
them and see if they can accommodate your requests for a
specific airline. Your ability to stick to travelling on
one or two airlines may lead to quicker rewards. Also,
check to see if the airline participates with any other
airlines. Often the miles are interchangeable between some
specified airlines. You then can choose from any of the
participating airlines and earn quicker rewards.
Once you have landed, also be sure to take advantage of
hotel reward points. Many chain hotels offer reward points
for staying at their facilities. These reward programs not
only provide points for free stays at the hotel, it also
comes with extra immediate perks. Participates in many
reward programs are automatically upgraded to a nicer room
whenever space permits. Additionally, holding a reward
account will allow the traveler to quickly and easily make
reservations, since all an individual~s personal
information is stored within the hotel~s system. Many
hotels have joined forces with airlines, so the reward
points earned from staying at a hotel can be easily
transferred into frequent flyer miles. This is similar to
programs offered by rental car agencies.
How much you travel for business, be sure to utilize
frequent flyer and hotel reward programs to earn points and
miles towards your fantasy vacation.
